Some more informations:
Receiving IM message:
* Regular chat sound/visual notification works when I my chat window is *not*
in focus
* No sound notification when my chat window is open.
* It doesn't work never when I receive message from jabber chat room
I get sound in pidgin in every of these

I can confirm that empathy sound notification are broken till now.
I have tried with freedesktop theme and copying files to feed necessary
names, but in some expected situations I have no sound.
This is theme I use, and files (relevant to empathy chat) I have:
bring...@nbringout-2:/usr/share/sou
No sound and text notification upon new received messages in karmic
beta!

This should not be a wishlist item. The visual notifications are
implemented, and the audio notifications are implemented in the program
as well. as Jonathan Rogers shows, the problem lies within the gnome-
desktop itself, lacking the necessary audio files. The whole sound theme
idea is completely

I can confirm that the sound events arn't working for me on 9.04 with
empathy 2.27.3.
