thats a feature. its not netmask, but prefix. there might be a better
applet handling. please file that bug on your own in bugzilla.gnome.org
where these kind of wishlist bugs are best discussed.

I upgraded to Intrepid today with the update manager and my wireless
network settings were inherited from the previous Hardy installation;
Now, from the output of "ifconfig wlan0" I see the netmask is
255.255.255.0 (see the attached text file)
Still, in the Network Manager it shows it to be 24 !!
