right, the errors suggests that synergy is doing something gtk doesn't
expect, not sure how it works exactly though and it would be useful to
have somebody having a clue about this software commenting there

I'm not sure if gedit is right in complaining about things when run
under synergy, or whether synergy is doing something bad. Perhaps it
would be good to ask people who know about synergy about this?

I stand by my analysis that it is the output when backgrounded that
causes the freeze. In any case, it doesn't freeze.

I don't get them with xeys or gnome-about.
It seems to matter that I am using synergy. If I kill synergys, gedit is
silent upon startup.

Yes, I open gedit locally. As soon as I run it from the command line
("gedit" and nothing else), I get this:
