Have since moved to xchat, but tried pidgin and it now starts. Did not
conduct exhaustive testing :)

I have a similar experience on Ubuntu 8.04.
I've attached the debug log. The freeze happened on 13:55:48.
This only happens when Pidgin is set to auto-connect on start up.
When I type pidgin -n it always works fine.

Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue
for you? Could you try to reproduce the same with Ubuntu 8.10 or 9.04?

I have experience a similar problem, intermittently. Running pidgin via
strace, it stalls trying to open an orbit socket.
If one removes the linc- file out of /tmp/ that it was trying to
open, it works again.
I have a stock, frequently updated Hardy install.

The problem appears to go away if I edit .purple/prefs.xml and remove
the
line. dpkg -S reports this file to be part of the pidgin package.
