Could be because my graphics card is integrated. I have noticed the
sound returns if I go to the console and type lspci, sometimes twice is
necessary.

Confirm the:
edit the/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base file as root by using the command:
gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
And append the following line to the file
options snd-hda-intel probe_mask=1
works in my case.

The before-mentioned fix does not work all the time. I have an Asus
M3N78 PRO, running only with the onboard NVidia 8300 chipset. On
Intrepid, Alsa 1.0.1.7 detects the sound board incorrectly as ALC888
instead of ALC1200. Using the before-mentioned fix, sound only works on
every third or forth rebo

My motherboard is a P5QL-EM.
I have a NVIDIA 9600 graphics card.
Kubuntu 8.1 with
Kernel 2.6.27-7
Alsa 1.0.17a
The following is part of the /bin/dmesg log file retrieved with
KSystemLog

Reproduced on the Asus P5Q-EM Motherboard. True - if you have an Nvidia
Card in the PCI-E slot (restricted drivers or not), there is no sound.
Sound is detected as the ALC888 (as shown in original bug description)
for the ALC1200 Realtek Chip. If you remove the Nvidia card, and use the
