Reading the thread it appears the problem is that gcj was being used and
the directory where gcj is changed and it did not update the path in the
configuration file, removing the file forces it to redetect java (as far
as i know) which corrects the problem.

I was having a similar problem, and found the following which fixed my problem:

Basically, remove javasettings_Linux_{arch}.xml from
~/.openoffice.org2/user/config/
