I have a SATA HDD and DVD Writer. IDE disabled in bios.
My DVD combo drive is Pioneer DVR-215BK.
8.10 will only boot if this drive is disconnected. It will
confirming this, since >1 user have the same issue...

I can verify this as well. Same SATA DVD Writer - SH-S203N will NOT
boot live cd. I disconnect it and installed intrepid with an external
usb dvd drive I have. After installation I upgraded using apt-get dist-
upgrade / apt-get upgrade, etc. after a few reboots I reconnected sata
