I have the same problem and the solution I found was to disable compiz and
enable metacity through the fusion icon, i hope that work for you guys!

I am having the same problem, using the free -ati driver with openarena
and sauerbraten. I noticed that reducing screen resolution fixes both
fickering and mouse locks.
