Solved on my side.
I've been updating distributions using update-manager for past 3 years.
Booting 8.10 live-cd and seeing keys working properly I reinstalled the
system (but kept /home directory).
After booting into freshly installed ubuntu, keys were still not
working. Then I checked "Keyboard

1. What the key *should* do.
These are 3 sound keys: Mute volume, lower volume and raise volume. Mute volume
key contains LED indicator which is turned on when volume is muted.
2. What keycode (magic number) the key produces on your laptop.

3. How to identify your laptop by the manufacturer and model.

Sound control works fine from "Volume control" in gnome. "Mute" LED
indicator on sound key is correctly switched on/off when muting/un-
muting sound from "Volume control".
