Alexander: Thanks, I think that was the problem. I had a simple "iface
eth0 inet dhcp" line in there, probably since long ago. I've removed it,
but I haven't rebooted yet.
It would be nice though i
the ifupdown connection is parsed from your /etc/network/interfaces.
Usually that device is then unmanaged as its upped by ifupdown package.
at best remove your device configuration from /etc/network/interfaces if
you want to use NM at all.
