I agree with #1 and #7.
Maybe Digikam could:
-unmount the device for us so that digikam can use it?
-provide a more thorough message suggesting that the user unmount the device?
Add to the error line: You may also need to make sure that the camera is not
mounted and in use by another program.
Digikam could offer better help/workaround in this case:

I have the same problem.
The less drastic workaround that I have is to wait for the popup, then
choose "Unmount" instead of a software or an action and you will be able
to use digikam after that for importing pictures.
The thing is, maybe "Unmount" should be in the action list. So you could say
