"ghc-pkg check" revealed some old manually installed xmonad stuff that
caused the problems.
As a fix for this problem. First uninstall all xmonad Ubuntu packages.
Then use ghc-pkg unregister to get rid of the manually installed
packages. After this reinstall the Ubuntu packages. I got my package

I was wrong. The problem is something that gets stored in user specific
system state. I create a new user account. On that account compiling and
using xmonad worked like a dream. Weird.

The problem seems to be that Jaunty is shipping with libghc6-x11-dev
version 1.4.2-1, while xmonad 0.8 requires version 1.4.1.
