It's not an issue any more. it's all working fine currently (except an
issue with the wifi driver which is on another ticket)

Yes, the update-manager disappeared during the upgrade and I run it
again after that

The logs indicate that something crashed during the upgrade. Could you
please attach the output of "ls -l /var/crash" ? Did you see anything
crash or did udpate-manager suddently disappear during the ugprade?

After running aptitude upgrade and aptitude dist-upgrade several times
(6), and removing the conflicts shown (sugar, gcc-4.2, cpp-4.2) it seems
to be working fine. :-)

but I still don't have kb/mouse on gdm :-(
