I had the same problem (nvidia proprietary drivers here) but for me it
would restart X every time I tried to run gnome-appearance-properties
(same as Ctrl-Alt-BkSp).
I removed libvisual-0.4-plugin and restarted X; everything is back to
normal now.
Will try and reinstall libvisual to see what happ
I did:
sudo apt-get remove libvisual-0.4-plugins
Fixed here as well.
I was able to reinstall the package
sudo apt-get install libvisual-0.4-plugins
and the problem is still not back. Beware, it uninstalled lives. Read
what packages it's uninstalling when you remove libvisual.

fixed it... but I dont know, what I will miss now...

i can confirm this bug on a Lenovo Thinkpad T61. Trying to change themes
has no effect, all the decorations seem very basic, also 3D acceleration
is gone or looks very ugly. Maybe it has something to do with the
xserver-xorg-video-i810 or -intel update?
