Since I upgraded to Kubuntu 08.10beta every time it upgrades the kernel and
the next time I reboot I get Python problems,(see bug reports). I'm also
having problems with the KDE desktop(compiz???) crashing and

It is correctly understood, that it crashed during an upgrade?
Do you know id guidance-power-manager was being upgraded as well (eg.
the version running was an older one)? You should be able to check
