This is probably a duplicate of bug #362315 or bug #428435
Could you please boot karmic live-CD and run on a terminal:
$ sudo blkid -p /dev/sdXN
where sdXN is your encrypted partition.
If karmic's blkid returns "Ambivalent result (probably more filesystems
on the device)" then this is a dup
I m having the same problem as of today with Jaunty. The solution i found is
the same as stated above
cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sda5 anything
mount -t ext3 /dev/dm-1 /root
ctrl+D

I am having the same problem (using the regular 64-bit PC (AMD64)
alternate install CD). Only in my case the encrypted volume is located
on a RAID 1 device. Tried it twice with the same result both times.

Installed Intrepid on the same machine last night (using the regular

Installing Ubuntu 20081021.3 on an encrypted partition worked for me with this
version without some workarounds. (older versions do not work)
Please try it and report your results.

My Hardy install was from the *32bit* alternate CD-ROM however, not sure
whether it makes any difference.

BTW, I installed Hardy in exactly the same fashion and it works nicely
i.e. when the Hardy box boots I am being prompted for the password of
the encrypted partition. Once that is supplied correctly the boot
process continues normally.
