Bugs, which
Installing launchpad-integration fixed the bug. Looks like kubuntu
doesn't install it by default. I tried installing a fresh daily kubuntu
image as of 15/10, and launchpad-integration is not there.

This works for me in both apps.
This could be one of a couple of things:
1) is launch pad reachable from your system at the time this problem occurs?
(try opening your browser to the following link and see if it works as
expected:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/intrepid/+sources/kdebase/
That would be a bug in the launchpad integration patch in kdelibs.
