Usually the effects ought to be turned off if your card is listed in a
blacklist, it's possible that yours is still missing there.

This was a default installation. No idea whether desktop effects were
turned on, or how to check it.
Btw, shouldn't this be reason enough to have any funny effects turned
off by default?

I have an ATI video chip, and use fglrx.
The most obvious change seems indeed be my "up"grade to 8.10... Before
the upgrade, with 8.04 and kde3, all was fine and dandy.

driver/chip are you using? Can you think of any change that would cause
