I was suffering the same issues.
Starting VLC as Remi suggested above solved my issue, (disabling embedding also
stopped crashing, but was not ideal)

I had the same problem using 9.10. I found that these suggestions help,
but I have seen that anyone has noted that the skinned version of the
app (selectable in the preferences) doesn't have this problem. I noticed
that if I choose the skinned over the default player setting my video
works fine.
...so please retry with a newer version.

If this is only occuring with the integrated video, then it should have

Hi,
metacity or compiz don't make any difference
but
creating a new account and starting a video with option "integrated
video in interface" activated in vlc makes no problems, everything just
works fine.
Mayby there is some personally configuration vlc saves, that causes the
problem?

I've tried the latest version in Ubuntu's repositories, and some PPA's

Open Rythmbox Music Player directly (do NOT play anything with it).
Minimize it if you want.
Open a file (mp3 or avi or whatever) that you want to play with VLC.

Don't ask me why!

I'm on 8.10, 64-bit, with Nvidia drivers. My issue seems the same as
everyone else above, with VC reporting "X11 request 2.0 failed with
error code" when running an AVI file that I KNOW works fine as I played
in VLC under Ubunut 8.04.
I just had a minor victory. In VLC prefs, I just clicked on in
Changing the video output at in preferences from OpenGL to Default

Same here. The only work around I found was to de-activate the option
that make the video integrated (advanced settings: -> Video )
