The problem can be solved installing an Ubuntu precompiled kernel like
2.6.22-14-generic.
This is because this kernel was compiled without the option "Enable SCSI
emulation".
If you want to use a newer kernel (like myself 2.6.29.1) you can
download the full kernel source from www.kernel.org, and
I have the same trouble on 2.6.24-23 =\

This problem seems to be fixed with updating to
linux-image-2.6.24-23
It's rolled out now on all our servers and the problem seems to be disappeared
Can more people confirm this?

I guess the SCSI emulation causes the kernel panic (both IDE ports works
perfect with kernels not emulating SCSI (Debian 4.0) (Ubuntu 7.10
Gutsy), but fails with Ubuntu 8.04 and 8.10.
Please set some kind of patch that make possible
** Description changed:
My system persistently crashes with a kernel panic during a copy between
hard disks evident by complete lock-up of the screen, flashing keyboard
LED's and a kernel panic dump to CLI on tty1
I have proven the crash does not occur using other Linux distributions
