Another symptom of the recent broken ALSA sound is that when I shut
down, the system hangs while trying to shut down ALSA.
I tried Yuval Tal's suggestion and edited
/etc/X11/Xsession.d/70pulseaudio
to comment out the code that loads pulseaudio. Then I rebooted, and ALSA
sound is working again:
I have the exact same problem as Reece Dunn, on a Dell inspiron 1720.
After the update today, the speaker was muted. Now when I unmute it, the
only noise that can be played is a crackling sound -- nothing
intelligible.

I would like to confirm this as well. I somehow managed to remove pulse
audio (not before I had to delete a file from
/etc/X11/Xsession.d/70...). Once pulse audio was gone, ALSA was working
fine.
I'm running on a Dell D630... Intel HDA.

and when I unmute it, I get a crackling sound. I have seen this

I can confirm this. I installed (from CD) Intreprid 2 days ago and audio
worked. I run a "apt-get dist-upgrade" yesterday evening between 4 and
9pm utc.
I rebooted my notebook this morning. Alsa volume-controles where muted.
Pulseaudio doesn't start anymore on boottime (it doesn't print any
errors
I'm still getting these problems with kernel 2.6.27-7-generic and
pulseaudio 0.9.10-2ubuntu8 (alsa-base hasn't changed version).
Just an observation - I've found that only version wine 1.1.6 has the
crackling - 1.1.5 is fine with this ALSA. (But 1.1.6 doesn't crackle in
Hardy.)
