I also experience problems with openoffice kerning. As I posted in
http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=92159, kerning does not
work for certain fonts: I copied calibri.ttf and Lucida Grande.ttf into
my /usr/share/fonts/truetype directory, and for them kerning does not
work.

And which font are you using by 'default' the default depends on what
fonts you have installed on your system.
