Vaguely similar problem here: xsane got itself into a strange state: preview
window was blank
(not the usual image and buttons) and left coloured dots as mouse was moved
across it. This
was after it failed to talk with the printer (HP PSC 750 printer + scanner)
because it was being
printed to.
Not a software bug. USB cable bug.

Sorry. Not a software bug. It's a bug with my USB cable. All work fine
with another cable.
