shortcuts defined, you should discuss that with upstream:

That the same commands have different meanings has nothing to do with
the short cuts.
I just wonder if anybody is using git without this shortcuts defined.

Ubuntu should not be inconsistent with Git upstream. Also, these
commands do not mean the same thing in Git as they do in other VCSs
(e.g. git checkout is more similar to svn switch). If you still want
these aliases, it is easy to configure them yourself: ‘git config
alias.st status’.
