I upgraded Ubuntu 8.04 to 8.10 using "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" as the
CD had the same white screen problem in it.
Now I can login to my desktop - for details go here:

Sorry, I gave up and moved to mandriva (which is fairly buggy too, but
at least I doesnt' have the white screen :))
