I'm experiencing the same thing. What's up with the "Open Directory" in
the new version. I also always used this to watch dvds from my hard
drive.

No, you are not correct.
Open directory uses a bunch of files and the correct way to open a Disc
is to "Open a disc...", even if it is on disk.
However, VLC 1.0 will work in both case detecting that a Open Folder is
VIDEO_TS.

Ok so here is a little bit about this bug.
There is a workaroud to open a "DVD on disk" (as it is called on some players
like PowerDVD), it is to go to Media / Open a disc... and browse to the
directory where the DVD has been ripped.
