Just to report that I am having the same problem as Russ above. Trying
to boot into Ubuntu 8.10 from disc it hangs at the "checking battery
state" message and does nothing further. (Will investigate further, as
new to Linux.)

I see this with an nvidia 8400GS card on an Asus P5QL-E board.

I thought it was the nvidia (173, 177 and 180) driver breaking, but I'm
