The progress bar not appearing early enough is very similar to bug
279073, which is why I'm marking this as a duplicate. The "just stops at
100%" sounds like the result of jockey crashing. If you still get it

I downloaded the Ubuntu Beta of 8.10 over Thursday evening - ubuntu-8.10
-beta-desktop-i386.iso,
Did a fresh install of that and all the updates and then decided to get the
nvidia working
(I dual-boot with XP and once nvidia is installed the screen position remains
the same in both boots).
