I suspect the problem is due to this change from Debian:

Previously (in Hardy) scripts/init-top/framebuffer was creating

Just found the following messages lurking on VT1:
bogl_init failed: opening /dev/fb0: No such file or directory
screen init failed
Then some debug output I added myself to the scripts/init-top/usplash
script in the initramfs image:
