I found that Compiz explicitly ignores EnterNotify events that occur because of an ungrab. Apparently, in drag-drop some app grabs the focus and releases it, when the object is dropped. In this situation X issues an EnterNotify event with the mode NotifyUngrab. If I let compiz not ignore this event
