Which email program were you using?
To be honest, I don't think that's enough information for a bug report, so I'm
converting this one to a question.
OpenOffice.org doesn't open documents from the Trash on my system (Ubuntu 8.10

I'm not super tech savvy. However, I've never had much trouble opening
documents on my desktop, in my document folders, or when they've been
sent as attachments.
Suddenly, this problem is stopping me from opening docs on my desk top.
Apparently
The document you attached is not a plain text file, it's in MS-Word
format, you can open it using OpenOffice.org. Gedit does not support
rich text formats.

open when I go to the link on the email bug report. This gives me hope
that my docs may yet be recovered.
