same problem here too!
but it does not happen always.
besides switching, screen freezes with 'pick window' effect also which i set
from ubuntu tweak.

I just tried compiz again, and it doesn't freeze anymore, but instead it
does a epilepsy inducing flickering when window cycling hits the
respective fullscreen application (it's not firefox specific, a
fullscreen gnome-terminal has the same effect)
