I had the same problem on a Fujitsu-Siemens si1520 laptop. I have tried two different brands of USB thumbdrives and they both gave same error. It ended up being to the fact that I had installed Ubuntu by using a USB stick instead of cd, so /dev/sdb1 was mounted as being the CD-rom, hence the confil

The problem might be a miswritten fstab file so it started working.If possible you can attach your fstab which went wrong here and the one that is working too,Since you solved it already i'm marking this as invalid.Can you reproduce the error if possible?
