This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in
it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try
with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are
available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .
If it remains an issue,
Mmh, perhaps can you try it from the console (without graphical
environment?) . When you are in the graphical environment, you can go to
the console by typing CTRL + ALT + F6 . From that point, you can maybe
try this :
1. Plug your USB key
2. ls /dev/sd*
3. sudo mkdir /media/USB
4. sudo mount -t v

I have tried

The first time I got to a graphical environment and a warning saying
'unable to start the gnome settings daemon', the a suggestion that log
out and in again may help.
