Linux user 66, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an
issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD
images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .
If it remains an issue,

Note that neither the vga=771 nor the acpi=off seems to fix the problem
for me. And I don't seem to have an option to turn off ACPI in the
BIOS.

Several users are reporting this. We need to find out if there is a
common hardware component cause. There is a reported work-around that
simply requires adding:
vga=771
to the kernel command-line in GrUB's boot menu.
If you are affected by this bug please post the results of these two
commands
