With Ubuntu Hardy the problem still exists. Currently I don't plan to
upgrade the machine further. I'll try to test it with an Ubuntu dapper
cups in the future. If that won't work I'm afraid it's a hardware
problem.

I tried turning on print error page and got the following:

I have the same problem too. Looks like my 4039 10 plus had issues with
the generated ps file.
If you enable printing of PS errors(On the front panel: MENUS -> setup
menu -> Print PS Error -> On) the printer give you an extra page with
some error reports.

I attached a Lexmark Z22 to my parallel port and was able to print the
test page correctly. I don't understand why the Lexmark 4039 10R won't
print, it works fine on my XP machine. The Z22 used the same parallel
port connection and cable.

Thanks Graham. From that log, cups thinks that the job was printed
successfully; I guess that was not actually the case. Till, any idea how
to further debug the backend and filters, to see where things go
haywire?

Sorry I screwed up. I went in and checked /etc/cups/cupsd.conf. The
changes you asked for were not there. I must not have saved the file
correctly.

Hm, the permissions of /var/log/cups/ and error_log look good, so I
wonder why cups cannot write to it. I'm afraid this needs some more
debugging. Can you please do

and change "LogLevel" to "debug" and insert a new line (right at the top
is fine)

The reported /dev/tty AppArmor problem is totally unrelated and also
totally harmless. It occurs everywhere, but is purely cosmetical.
First, let's find out why /var/log/cups/error_log cannot get created,
since this is required for further debug steps. What is the output of
ls -ld /var/log/cups
