I've found what I believe to be the fix in upstream kde svn. I've build the
package with the fix included:

Is it permanent that it doesn't pack the icons in the system tray?
It works fine for me (as long as I have it set to size: Large). Could be a
change to when it chooses to do the packing.

I had notice the same thing, considered it likely a consequence of an extra
package I installed in testing (I installed every single non-debug package
to test before uploading). Thanks for letting us know.

use it now for 2 days I think. Works perfectly. Except one minor thing:
the system tray does not pack the icons in 2 rows. The older version
does this. But I think most people will not notice this.

Great work! Everything seems to run smoothly, and the only changes
noticed until now are cosmetic improvements to the taskbar. I'll report
again later after testing them some more.
