I know this bug is already closed, but profiling should create a bigger
improvement considering it customizes the bootup process to the
computer. And your readahead might be over-enthusiastic if you are
logging in after you do the profile option, because it will then try and
load all the files you
Understood.
Reprofiling is a habit I got into from reading various "tweak" threads
and posts. Probably at the time it was first posted (I'm wondering if it
was 6.06?) the default system configuration was less than ideal so there
would have been a speed improvement. However, it's good to know I nev
No, not necessarily.
readahead can actually increase boot time
it's the reason we don't even document the "profile" option - if you use
it, you should not necessarily expect an improvement

So from the original entry:
"Readahead's profiling seems to be overenthusiastic."
Shouldn't the profiling result in shorter a boot time? Again, referring
back to the original, the generated readahead list was huge and
contained lots of pointless entries. Hence the bug report - this doesn't
(didn'
Yes.
So you booted with profile, and it now makes sure all files your boot sequence
reads are read early in memory.
That's exactly what it *does*

It sounds like you've booted with "profile" at some point; that will
rewrite your /etc/readahead files.

Seems better with 2.6.27-2:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/etc/readahead$ wc -l boot

Long file still but no silly .desktop files etc.

Hmm... I installed 2.6.27-1 and reprofiled:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/etc/readahead$ wc -l boot
2815 boot
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/etc/readahead$ wc -l desktop
253 desktop
Something hinky is going on with my setup, the version of readahead is
the same.
My root is JFS mounted relatime. /home is on ext3 relati
This does not happen with me, although the readahead version is slightly
different:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/etc/readahead$ wc -l boot
838 boot
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/etc/readahead$ wc -l desktop
253 desktop
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/etc/readahead$ uname -r
2.6.26-5-generic
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/etc/readahead$ dpkg
Also experienced this with intrepid with kernel 2.6.26.. with 2.6.27-1.1
it's down to a few seconds.
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ uname -r
2.6.27-1-generic
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$
