combination I guess.

Sorry for the late reply, sometimes these bugs slip past my
notifications. Normal mode in Ubuntu means that Desktop Effects are
enabled. Please set that value to "none" and let me know if this
problem arises again.

No, my laptop does not have any desktop effects enabled. Its on normal mode,
neither *None* nor *Extra*.

Alt+Space+R after maximizing a window is set to resize the window, not
unmaximize it. If you want to unmaximize it then you need to press
Alt+Space+x again. Not to ignore that a window resize freezes your
computer, does your laptop have desktop effect enabled?
