Ubuntu 8.04.1 Live System on a 4 GB USB Stick.
I ran System Update, then got error messages from System Update - please
see the attached file.

In "debugging hal" I found that I should do this:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/hal stop
[sudo] password for martin:
* Stopping Hardware abstraction layer hald
[ OK ]
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo hald
