I also got this error just after I booted up Jaunty, but network manager
survived/was rebooted and currently operates flawlessly.

I tried to run nm-applet with valgrind as described there, but for some
reason it never shows up in the notification area anymore. I did kill
the previously running nm-applet before, but note that this one also
isn't showing up in that area.
