Ideally it should so some validation when I put the directory in the
preferences window and not even let me set the bad path. Then when a
new torrent is added it should check again before writing the file.

I believe that this crash has to do with the fact that the user running
transmission did not have permission to write to the destination
location.
If I change it so that the user has write permission, this crash does
not occur.
