Sorry, I finally realized that these lines
[: 25: ==: unexpected operator
exec: 25: -a: not found
were an error that I'd had before because of a version of gfxboot-grub that
messed up update-grub. I installed a working version and it's fine now, at
least with 2.6.24-21.41 in Proposed.

that you have no space left on your /boot device.
