Thank you for responding to my post/bug. Fortunately now I'm running
Ubuntu on a new rig (Intel Q6600 CPU with Gigabyte GA-X48-DS4, 4GB of
RAM and RAID0 for Windows, single Barracuda 750GB - same as before), and
everything seams to be in order.
