I'm rolling new images now with the updated debian-installer. I've also
arranged for this not to happen in future (the CD will simply fail to
build rather than build brokenly):

The problem seems to be that the debian package for the kernel on the
alternate image is:
pool/main/l/linux/linux-image-2.6.26-5-generic_2.6.26-5.14_i386.deb
Whereas the kernel under the netboot directory is:
# strings install/netboot/ubuntu-installer/i386//linux | grep '2\.6'
2.6.26-4-gen
Same problem happens with the ubuntu alternate image, 20080805.
