Hi .
I found your Card-Id (161F|2037) in Openchrome driver and it is Sotec WA2330S5,
based on PM800 chipset.
Please build and install newest Openchrome drivers.
All was described at:

Interesting! Am travelling on holiday, so will only try it out after I
get back in about 8 days' time. For future reference in case it helps
others: I certainly did not install a via driver, the problem kicked
in during the first installation---there is something else that
installs it. Let's hope t
The "bug" was caused by the -via driver being also present on the
installed system (say you installed it, or something did). As Xorg
matched the PCI id for both, openchrome and via, drivers it chose to use
via, and not openchrome. Removing the via package should be more than
enough.

...
Do you have any idea why it is still "incomplete" and/or why whether
anything is being done or likely to be done about it?
I am not sure it should be re-opened; I submitted it not so much to
fix my own problem as because

OK, I am adding two xorg.conf: one from livecd, namely
/usr/share/xresprobe/xorg.conf, and the other from the installation,
namely /media/disk/etc/X11/xorg.conf.

That's interesting.. livecd loads openchrome like it should, but after
installation it uses via. Please attach the xorg.conf from the installed
system.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which
is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper
developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at [WWW]
