just to be clear, the kernel panics I see are in the 2.6.24.20.23
package version
the compatwireless upstream from http://intellinuxwireless.org/
is also giving the same problem (2007-07-30 and 2008-08-06 snapshots).
I didn't get much acknowledgement of this problem from compatwireless mailing

I've got a Latitude D620 with 3945 wireless. I get a kernel panic on
suspend/hibernate/rmmod iwl3945 with linux-backports-
modules-2.6.24-20.23 installed. No panic if the module is uninstalled.

Here is the fix:
1. Download from http://intellinuxwireless.org/?n=Downloads the 7/7/2008
firmware
2. From the archive, extract the file iwlwifi-4965-2.ucode to /tmp
3. sudo cp /tmp/iwlwifi-4965-2.ucode /lib/firmware/2.6.24-20-generic
4. Now, the backports module will work (I was lazy so did a
re the bug with the backports module, probably a new firmware version is
required to be added to the patch.

I tried 'rmmod' and I got flashing capslock freezing machine completely.
