OK, after I reinstalled ubuntu 7.10 and enabled the following in
/etc/apt/sources.list:
http://ports.ubuntu.com gutsy/universe
The install succeeded.
Note that the reason for reinstall is not related to this (it is because
xorg crashes). I believe my update to 8.04 could be the culprit,
however

I installed Ubuntu 7.10, and then updated to 8.04 from the Update

What version of Ubuntu are you using? Your O.S. is updated? Can you try
to install libwxgtk2.6-0 after "sudo apt-get update"?
