This has been an ongoing problem for me for years. The list presented
makes no sense in terms of the order the apps are presented. Also,
since there are multiple entries for many apps, why are they not listed
together? They are scattered at random throughout the list.

Same here, MichaelIM. The application list does not change regardless of
the filetype, I tested the "open with..." dialogue on 3 different
filetypes: .py, .jpg, .ps and the order of the list was the same.
I think a preference to change the sorting clause would be the best
solution

I was about to file a new bug report but found this one.
I am fairly certain that from a usability point of view, this is
definitely a bug. I have the open with dialog up trying to open a text
file (with a .txt extension). The dialog recognises the file type, but
the application listing is:

ok, maybe sort by name can be included in the wish list. The proposed list is
not always good for unknown files and thus it would be nice to have a list
sorted by names if I already know which application is the right one.
