I changed the section in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, and then pressed Ctrl Alt
Backspace
Logged in, fired up mythTV, problem still the same.
Composite is definately off (I think) because wobbly windows, desktop
cube etc no longer works.

Try disabling the Composite extension by adding the following section to
your xorg.conf:
Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Disable"

Then restart the Xserver and see if it solves the problem.
